Question: How does Organic pet food help my pet live longer? Is there a difference between Organic and all natural food?
I have been thinking about feeding my dog Organic pet foods, then I see something called “all natural foods.” What is the difference if any?

Answer:

Answer by Alice
Organic means grown without herbicides or pesticides. All natural means everything in it is natural… eg. a plant, animal or grain.

Pesticides are made to kill things… anyone who thinks they can kill the bugs and weeds but are perfectly safe to consume should really think about it. I know they are consumed in minute quantities, but over time I tend to wonder why we have so much more cancer and immunodeficiency ailments these days such as asthma and severe allergies.

Whichever you go with be sure it is a good quality animal diet… as far as cost goes you are better off buying a grain free (or at lease wheat and corn free) diet over an organic diet with wheat or corn in the top 5 ingredients. If you can afford an organic grain free diet…then your pup is one lucky dog!

Wheat and corn are much harder on your animal than the small amount of pesticides are…

And this is coming from someone who buys organic LOTS and truely understands the difference.

Question: Beef recall – is it time to go back to eating “real food”?
Grow-your-own, farmers markets, country farm stalls, organic food? Are all the food scares nature’s way of telling us that intensive/corporate farming, GM, poor animal husbandry is bad for us, and traditional ways are better?

Answer:

Answer by Snuppy1
Traditional ways are much better…but the big industries are not interested in quality…the only vision corporate America is the next fiscal quarter…

Question: Where Can I Test Bad Food For Contaminants?
Recently, my wife and I have gotten violently ill from Whole Foods “Organic” 365 Frozen Broccoli. I might have thought it was something else, but this is how I narrowed it down:

1) Have gotten a little shakey eating small quantities in the past, but thought nothing of it.

2) 2 weeks ago, we had a dish made mostly of broccoli. That night, we both fell ill with violent stomach problems (mostly out the back, rather than throwing up), severe shakes and jitters.

3) Last night, had the same dish again and got JUST AS SICK!

Now, we have also had the same dish without the broccoli during the week last week and felt no problems. So… I have a half a bag of frozen broccoli that needs to be tested. This “organic” broccoli has no country of origin on the bag. My guess? China. So where do I get it tested? Is there a free public service that does this? Any lab workers reading this that want to volunteer?

Answer:

Answer by Dr OChem
Though posted in the chemistry forum, I think you should have your broccoli tested for microbes. Here is why. Since you are eating “organic” food, it is more likely being fertilized by animal feces than one in which the simple nutritional chemicals are applied. The spinach e. coli contamination that had occurred earlier, was due to contamination from animal feces.

We’ve passed the organic pad Cheebo on Sunset Blvd. many times, but will definitely have to stop by there now that Joe Jonas has dropped by and swooped up to-go food.

Question: Why, suddenly, has healthy, good-for-your-body food become known as “diet food”?
Has anyone else noticed?

I can’t order a salad with fat-free dressing without my friends sitting there, trying to tell me I shouldn’t be dieting. Maybe I don’t want to order the hamburger with french fries that isn’t good for my body, has probably 1000+ calories, and has almost no nutritional value.

The organic food aisles in grocery stores are almost always empty, while you are in TRAFFIC-like situations in the bulk food section.

The only healthy meal items are always named “fat free”, “low calorie”, and “low carb.”

Are there any other things you’ve noticed?
What is your opinion on this topic?

Are small farms and gardens going to be against the law? Well if the liberals in congress have their way it will be. This ridiculous law is just one of many that congress is going to push on us to protect us. Well I for one am getting damn tied of losing my freedoms to the government in the name of protecting me. I can protect myself. I dont need the help of the federal government. All that I need is that they stay out of my way. As is stated in this video, this law will only hurt small business. It will just create another layer of federal bureaucracy to further hinder small farms, and small organic farms. While, as is usual for most laws, it will not help us at all, or very little. If I have to die of salmonella to keep my freedoms, then I am willing to die, because like they say, freedom is not free. So if I understand this law correctly, the government will now monitor what you are growing in your own garden, what food you buy at your local grocery store, and even the fruits and vegetables that you buy at your local farmers market, what a joke. This is what is coming to America, total government control of your life, from what you eat, where you go, who you see, where your children go to school, what your children learn at school, etc. etc., I could go on and on. Just what part of total government control would someone not understand? Is this what Americans want? I dont think so, so we had better start acting up or this what we will get. jbranstetter04

Question: What are some unique, healthy and easy to make “comfort food” type dishes?
Preferably somethings that can be made with organic ingredients?

Answer:

Answer by musicimprovedme
Most soups are considered comfort foods and they can be very healthy. Brown your meat, then add veg of choice, stock, and if you like you can add barley, pasta, or rice. Use organics, fresh, homemade components as you see fit, kind of depends how you shop and how involved you are in the kitchen. A lot of soups you can take shortcuts that save lots of time and don’t affect the nutrition or cost…frozen veg for example. Just remember, if you add only healthy ingredients, you get only healthy food.

Crockpot beans are about the healthiest, cheapest, easiest thing you can possibly do. Serve over brown rice or with some whole grain chewy bread, with a green salad and light dressing. You can also use these beans to make a ground turkey chili, or you can add them to a minestrone soup, or you can puree some with a little of their own juice to make a bean dip for chips or Mexican food.

You can also do stuff like beef stew or pot roast…very easy in the crockpot, very healthy, just watch the added fat and salt and gloppy gravies and such. Rely on your fresh herbs and if you need a sauce use the au jus, or reduce it with some wine.

Pasta is a worldwide comfort food…toss with veg in an olive oil or light salad dressing or a fresh marinara with a bit of parm. Likewise pizza can be very healthy and kids love it…it all depends what you put on it.

Potatoes are popular everywhere too…cheap and plentiful, versatile and humble. We now know that potatoes are about the equivalent of same amount of white sugar…but you can improve on them…when you make mashed potatoes for example, you can blend in some cauliflower to reduce the carbs a bit and add some of the nutrition from the cabbage/broccoli family. You can also switch your white potatoes for sweet potatoes when you make fries or oven wedges and you can switch from mayo based potato salad to olive oil and herbed potato salad.

Fruit tarts are a relatively healthy dessert, they have some nutrition from the fruit, and they are honest real food, straightforward and uncomplicated…This is also a chance to use a lot of organic ingredients. And they are super easy to put together, can be free form.

You can make things like chicken pot pie a little healthier…better ingredients, a little less fat, crust on top only, thicken the gravy with brown rice or something instead of meaningless flour or cornstarch.

Also do note that sometimes you can mess with comfort food too much, and something gets lost in the translation. How do you fix mac and cheese? You DON’T! What you do is serve it every once in a while, in a reasonable portion, with a heaping green salad on the side.

Question: organic food..? scam or reality?
I myself try to lead a healthy lifestyle..eating healthy working out all that good stuff..but all new interest in “organic food” puzzles me..how can food truely be organic if our air has tons of pollutants in it..when we still have acid rain coming down on plants..and we still have bugs landing on plants and leaving fecal material on them…\…the air has chemicals and pollutants in it that the plants breathe..how can something truly be organic….using chemicals these days seems to be taboo..but if it wasnt for chemicals how would food stay preserved..how would there be medication that has saved my life and countless other’s lives..?maybe it is just me but i think organic food is a huge scam..i have known plenty of people that ate horribly their entire life and live to be well over ninety…is organic food really all its cracked up to be..or is it just another scam or trend that people tend to fall into?
