Question: Why do so many people think “all natural” is better?
I read so many questions on Yahoo Answers that go something like this:
“How can I (fill in the blank) naturally?”
Or
“What sort of all natural remedies are there for (fill in the blank)?”
A lot of people have the idea that an “all natural” product is better. Well, think about this.
Rattlesnake venom is “all natural.”
Hurricanes are “all natural.”
Earthquakes, killer bees, fire ants, smallpox, and sunburn are “all natural.”
So these are better? Scientists have worked for decades to make things better. People say “I don’t want chemicals in my food!” “I want organic, I don’t want pesticides!” “I don’t want genetically modified food!” “I don’t want preservatives in my food!”
Well, here are two facts.
1. There are more chemicals, etc. in our lives than ever before.
2. We are living longer than ever before.
Personally, I’d rather eat bug spray than eat bugs, and I’d rather eat preservatives than spoiled food.
Man has improved on nature in many, many ways. Nature doesn’t allow us to fly, but man made machines do. I could go on and on.
So is “all natural” really better?
I am very impressed with the answers I’ve received. There are some well argued points being made, and nobody descended to calling people names. This is what Yahoo Answers is for, in my opinion.
OwlBear, I’m not convinced that ADD is anything more than bad behavior, although my mind is open. Autism is certainly more widely diagnosed, but is it really more common? I don’t know.
And there’s something else about DDT. Without it, malaria-bearing mosquitoes killed more humans than DDT ever did. I’m not arguing with your overall point, just making a statement that there is more than one side to every issue.
My favorite answer so far came from Hunter, by the way. As a small breasted woman, I have to agree with you that natural is better!
Any more thoughts anybody?

Question: please help me find the best dry cat food?
my cat hates the raw diet and wet food so please don’t lecture me on that, i have tried several flavors and brands and as a topper and he either cries for hours or eats around it. he has a water fountain at all times. and i always acclimate him to food. i think the junk foods like friskies and meow mix is better for him actually, shiny coat and solid stools. whenever i give him “premium” or “organic foods” like natures recipe, solid gold, or nutro it seems to be too rich for him, he gets diarrehrea and his coat is full of dandruff. now the junk food is what he enjoys (friskies, meow mix) and it is affordable. but its junk and i would wnat him on something healthier, without the dandruff and messy stools, and he refuses to eat science diet, which is ok because it is just overpriced junk food. what do you recommend? and please no raw or wet diets i have tried them he hates it and im not going to let him starve so i can say “o ya i feed raw only”

A since heterorphs, humans for example do not contain the mechanisms to synthesise food. So we must eat to gain nutrients.

Organic means grown without herbicides or pesticides. All natural means everything in it is natural… eg. a plant, animal or grain.
Pesticides are made to kill things… anyone who thinks they can kill the bugs and weeds but are perfectly safe to consume should really think about it. I know they are consumed in minute quantities, but over time I tend to wonder why we have so much more cancer and immunodeficiency ailments these days such as asthma and severe allergies.
Whichever you go with be sure it is a good quality animal diet… as far as cost goes you are better off buying a grain free (or at lease wheat and corn free) diet over an organic diet with wheat or corn in the top 5 ingredients. If you can afford an organic grain free diet…then your pup is one lucky dog!
Wheat and corn are much harder on your animal than the small amount of pesticides are…
And this is coming from someone who buys organic LOTS and truely understands the difference.
